Sleep Issues and Mental Health Problems (CANCELLED)

Dr Tony Fernando, an award winning psychiatrist from the University of Auckland, will be the resource person for the day.

This seminar will be a mixture of lectures and case based teaching on common mental health conditions.
The common causes of sleep disorders will be discussed. These include depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, primary insomnia and restless legs syndrome. The treatments for these conditions will be discussed.
The common mental health conditions will also be discussed. This includes depression, anxiety and drug and alcohol disorders and somatoform disorders. Issues such as treatment resistant depression and anxiety will be discussed. Participants are welcome to bring cases they are having difficulty with.
Audience: Applicants should be those who work with patients who present with sleep problems and mental health problems and ideally be nurses, doctors, pharmacists, midwives but other disciplines are welcome to attend.

This interactive workshop will provide skills that will enhance your role and give you additional confidence to provide simple, clear nutrition messages appropriately tailored to your individual patient with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
The day will demonstrate ways to teach clear nutrition messages using innovative teaching tools. A key part of this course involves a health psychologist providing strategies for motivating patients to make healthy food choices, lose weight and begin to self manage.
If you are a health professional who educates people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes then this day will provide you with some useful practical tools.

An obstetrician will discuss the options for managing first trimester loss including conservative management versus D&C.
An update will be presented re screening tests during pregnancy including STIs, HIV, Hb A1c, polycose, GTT and other.
An interactive session will address the issues of scanning - is there sufficient evidence for dating, viability, nuchal translucency, anatomy, cardiac, growth, large for dates and post dates assessment scans?
Practitioners are invited to bring along scenarios from practice for discussion at the seminar.

Cardiovascular Disease Management Update

Facilitators: Professor Norman Sharpe, Medical Director of the National Heart Foundation and Director of the PHARMAC Seminar Series, and cardiology colleagues will present an update for clinicians on current themes in cardiology.
This seminar will provide an update on the management of common cardiovascular conditions including CV risk (primary and secondary prevention), hypertension and lipids, acute coronary syndromes, arrhythmias and heart failure.
Delegates are encourages to bring their own brief case studies for discussion.

Pre-eclampsia, Diabetes and Other Pregnancy Complications (FULL)

A research specialist will present the evidence to date re pre-eclampsia including:
-identifying the risk factors for pre-eclampsia;
-laboratory investigations;
-best practice re antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum management.
Diabetes and pregnancy will be reviewed in relation to BMI, maternal age and the 'cut off' levels currently used in New Zealand. Is diabetes in pregnancy under-diagnosed by the NZ guidelines?
Other medical conditions affecting pregnancy will be addressed and participants are invited to bring their questions from practice.

Medicines Management Update

The safe and effective use of medicines is a principle goal for primary health care providers. The importance of this has been recognised in the Primary Health Care Strategy and more recently in the National Medicines Strategy.
This seminar covers the National Framework of pharmacy medicine management services and deals with practical aspects and case studies from such services. It also demonstrates an on-line method for outcomes recording.
