Update on STIs including during pregnancy

Date: 07-December-2009

Location: PHARMAC, Wellington

Speakers: The director for the day is Sue Pullon, with assistance from Jane Kennedy, Clinical Director of the Sexual Health Service, Wellington. Speakers will include experts from sexual health, public health and pregnancy care fields.

Due to demand, as this session will be very similar to the STI update offered in 2008, preference will be given to people who did not attend last year.

Sexually transmitted infections are common in New Zealand, and the incidence is increasing. The highest rates of STIs occur in young people, including those who are pregnant, but people of all ages in new and changing relationships are also at risk.

Most people with STIs present to primary care services, not only with possible symptoms, as contacts of those with symptoms, or requesting STI check ups, but also with apparently unrelated concerns. Primary care services are also in an excellent position to provide STI education and pro-actively offer screening where appropriate.

This workshop will provide the opportunity for nurses, doctors and midwives working in the community to:

• review and update in best practice for the diagnosis and management of the common STIs, including during pregnancy and post partum

• consider the issues and current policies around STI screening, especially for Chlamydia, and HIV in early pregnancy

• consider the diagnosis and management of STIs in relation to contraception, unplanned and/or unwanted pregnancy

Audience: Primary care nurses, GPs, midwives and other health professionals, especially those who work with young people.
